He Went to Defend His Daughter — Ended Up Dead at the Hands of…

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in New Jersey after a father was allegedly beaten to death while trying to protect his teenage daughter — and the alleged attackers were once close family friends.

According to a press release from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, 55-year-old Eric Hannah and his 17-year-old son, identified only by his initials J.H., have been charged with homicide in the death of 54-year-old Louis “Gus” Serbeck.

Authorities say the violence erupted on Easter Sunday after Serbeck and his daughter went to confront Hannah and his son at their home about an alleged assault that had taken place the day before. Prosecutors stated that Serbeck’s daughter accused J.H. of assaulting her on Saturday, prompting Serbeck to demand answers face-to-face.

When Serbeck and his daughter arrived at the Hannah residence, a confrontation quickly turned physical. Prosecutors say that Serbeck initially fought with J.H., who sustained facial injuries during the scuffle. In retaliation, J.H. allegedly grabbed a metal baseball bat and struck Serbeck multiple times in the head. Prosecutors claim that Eric Hannah then joined the assault, hitting Serbeck in the back of the head with a flashlight. During the violent altercation, Serbeck’s daughter was also allegedly struck in the head by J.H.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported Serbeck toward a hospital, but he tragically died in the ambulance on the way there.

Both Eric Hannah and his son were arrested the same day. Hannah faces charges including homicide, aggravated assault, conspiracy, and multiple weapons violations. He remains in custody at Cumberland County Jail without bond. J.H. has been charged with homicide and aggravated assault, and is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility. Authorities have not yet determined if he will be tried as an adult.

In addition to the homicide charges, J.H. also faces charges for the initial alleged assault against Serbeck’s daughter.

Speaking to WPVI, Serbeck’s younger brother, Christopher Serbeck, expressed his devastation and shock, explaining that their families had been close for years.
“Hannah was a lifelong friend of the family,” Christopher said. “He went to school with my oldest brother. We knew him our whole lives. No one expected anything like this to happen.”

The community remains stunned as the investigation continues into how a decades-long friendship ended in such a horrific and violent way.
