A Pennsylvania man has been arrested after allegedly burning over 60% of his girlfriend’s body with a clothes iron because he believed — incorrectly — that she was cheating on him.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, Burton L. Byrd held the woman captive inside their Pittsburgh apartment for several days, from Saturday through Tuesday, refusing to let her leave or seek medical treatment. When he finally released her, he reportedly ordered her to lie about the attack, instructing her to claim she had been assaulted near a Wendy’s restaurant. Byrd also allegedly threatened to harm her family if she told the truth.
Police were alerted to the situation after the woman arrived at a hospital on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m., and medical staff suspected a case of severe domestic violence.
The woman told officers that the assault began on Saturday when Byrd accused her of being unfaithful.
“He figured he would punish me,” she said.
According to the affidavit, Byrd forced the woman to strip naked and tied her hands together with shoelaces. He then allegedly beat her with a belt and punched her repeatedly in the face. Officers noted visible injuries, including significant bruising around her eye and broken blood vessels, suggesting repeated blows.
The abuse escalated when Byrd allegedly plugged in a clothes iron and initially tested its heat by tapping it on her skin. Dissatisfied with the heat level, he waited until it became fully hot, then pressed it against different parts of her body while demanding she confess to cheating.
“I kept saying no, I didn’t cheat on him,” the woman told police. After enduring about six burns, she said she made up a story admitting infidelity just to make the torture stop.
The brutal ordeal lasted for approximately four hours, according to authorities. Afterward, Byrd allegedly attempted to treat her severe burns with gauze but continued to deny her requests to go to a hospital.
Eventually, the woman was able to seek help. After arriving at one hospital, she was quickly transferred to a facility with a specialized burn unit. Doctors expect her to remain hospitalized for at least two weeks due to the extent of her injuries.
Byrd has been charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, intimidation of a witness, and false imprisonment. It remains unclear whether he has retained legal counsel.
