South Carolina prosecutors are urging the court to reject a plea for leniency from Jamie Komoroski, the woman who killed a newlywed bride in a devastating drunk driving crash and is now seeking to shorten her 25-year prison sentence.
Komoroski, 27, was behind the wheel of a speeding Toyota Camry on the night of April 28, 2023, in Folly Beach, South Carolina. Traveling at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone, she slammed into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller, 34, and Aric Hutchinson, 36, along with two family members. Miller was killed instantly, while Hutchinson and the others were seriously injured. Authorities later confirmed Komoroski’s blood alcohol level was .261 — more than three times the legal limit.
In December, Komoroski pleaded guilty to charges including DUI resulting in death, DUI resulting in great bodily injury, and reckless homicide. She was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. However, shortly after her sentencing, Komoroski’s attorneys filed a motion requesting a reduced sentence, arguing that media coverage had unfairly influenced the court and led to a disproportionately harsh punishment compared to similar cases.
Prosecutors pushed back forcefully against that claim this week, asking the court to deny her request without even holding a hearing. They emphasized that the sentence was well within the statutory range for her offenses and that her crime — taking the life of a newlywed bride just hours after her wedding — was unlike any other DUI case.
Prosecutors also rejected the defense’s argument that the sentence constituted “cruel and unusual punishment,” calling it a “flawed” and misleading analysis. They stressed that the court had carefully considered all the evidence and victim impact statements before delivering the verdict.
The victims’ families have also strongly opposed any reduction in Komoroski’s sentence. In an emotional statement at sentencing, Aric Hutchinson — the widowed husband — said:
“I wish more than anything that it was me instead of Sam. I wish I had died that night so she didn’t have to go alone.”
The tragic case has drawn national attention, highlighting the devastating consequences of drunk driving — and now, a fierce battle over justice is unfolding in the aftermath.
