Dan Bongino Back at Work as Trump Fumes Over Epstein Clash

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino is back on the job—at least for now—after abruptly skipping work Friday and reportedly threatening to resign following a fiery clash with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the handling of the controversial “Epstein files.”

Sources say Bongino, who was handpicked by President Donald Trump, had a heated confrontation inside the White House last week over what he viewed as Bondi’s mismanagement of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged co-conspirators. The dispute triggered a public eruption from Trump’s base and forced the president to intervene with an unusually sharp defense of Bondi on social media.

“What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and ‘gals’? They’re attacking Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We have a PERFECT Administration… and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies—Jeffrey Epstein!”

At the center of the storm is a July 6 DOJ memo concluding Epstein died by suicide and that no “client list” existed—despite Bondi claiming earlier this year that such a list was “on my desk.” The finding ignited backlash among MAGA loyalists who believe Epstein’s death and alleged ties to high-profile elites are part of a broader cover-up.

Bongino’s frustration reportedly stemmed from Bondi’s public promises of accountability that failed to materialize. The tension escalated when he was accused of leaking internal dissent within the FBI, alleging he and Director Kash Patel had pushed for greater transparency. Bongino denied being the source.

By Monday morning, after a weekend of speculation over his possible resignation, CNN confirmed that Bongino had returned to work. However, insiders suggest the standoff has deepened internal divisions within the administration.

Adding to the drama, Bondi appeared prominently alongside Trump and the First Lady at a FIFA match in New Jersey on Sunday—signaling the president’s continued support amid calls for her ouster.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries weighed in, accusing Trump, Bondi, and MAGA figures of fueling “conspiracy theories” for political gain. “Now the chickens are coming home to roost,” Jeffries said, hinting at possible congressional action to force the release of withheld Epstein documents.

In an effort to cool tensions and appease the base, some Trump allies are lobbying for the appointment of a special counsel to reopen the Epstein investigation. Among the names floated: former Rep. Matt Gaetz, a controversial figure with a history of ethics violations and sex trafficking allegations—making him a highly polarizing option.

Despite the uproar, Trump has remained largely silent on Bongino’s internal rebellion. But sources say the president is privately frustrated that a trusted ally helped ignite a MAGA mutiny over one of the administration’s most sensitive topics.

With Bondi under siege and Bongino’s future in limbo, the Epstein files have once again detonated a firestorm inside Trump’s orbit—one that may not be extinguished without major concessions.
