Vance: ‘Emergency’ Exists Over Drug Ingredients, Supply Chain

Vance: Drug Ingredient Shortages Pose ‘National Emergency’
Vice President J.D. Vance is defending President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policy, calling it a direct response to a looming national security threat.

Speaking Thursday with Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly, Vance warned that hostile foreign governments are threatening to cut off U.S. access to critical imports — including pharmaceutical ingredients and key manufacturing components. “If these governments are threatening to cut us off from that stuff, that is, by definition, a national emergency,” he said.

The interview comes amid a legal battle over Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs. A federal trade court initially blocked the move, saying Trump overstepped his authority. But an appeals court has temporarily reinstated the tariffs as litigation continues.

Vance argued the president has broad constitutional and statutory latitude to act in foreign policy and economic crises, even if courts object. “The president has very broad discretion to fight back, to bring American industry back home, and to make American consumers protected and much safer,” he said, adding that ignoring supply chain threats would erode U.S. resilience and jeopardize national security.
