President Donald Trump’s top immigration advisor, Tom Homan, delivered a sharp warning on Monday to New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, following the candidate’s public vow not to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in deporting illegal immigrants.
When asked by reporters how the Trump administration would respond to Mamdani’s pledge, Homan didn’t mince words.
“Good luck on that,” Homan said. “Because we’re going to be in New York City. And President Trump has been crystal clear — we’re doubling and tripling down on sanctuary cities. Not because they’re Democrat-run, but because that’s where the threat is. That’s where public safety risks and national security threats are being released onto the streets because these officials refuse to honor ICE detainers.”
Homan emphasized that states like Florida, where every sheriff department cooperates with ICE, pose no such problem — which is why federal resources are now being concentrated where they’re most needed.
“We’re going to flood the zone,” he declared. “We’ll put boots on the ground in sanctuary cities. If we can’t get to them in jail, we’ll get them in the community. If local officials block ICE, we’ll go to job sites. Either way, we’re getting the bad guys off the streets.”
Federal Crackdown Coming for Sanctuary Cities
Homan’s statement underscores a growing federal strategy under Trump: shift immigration enforcement directly into the heart of jurisdictions that refuse cooperation. That means more community operations, more workplace raids, and increased visibility of ICE in liberal strongholds.
This isn’t just political posturing. Trump has already pledged federal intervention should Mamdani win the mayoral race and carry out his anti-ICE platform.
“We don’t need a communist in this country,” Trump stated bluntly during a recent rally. “But if we have one, I’ll be watching very carefully — for the sake of the nation.”
He even hinted at consequences as serious as federal arrests of non-compliant officials and the withdrawal of federal funding to the city.
The Bigger Picture
This debate over sanctuary cities is more than a legal standoff — it’s a test of political will. Liberal politicians like Mamdani often frame their defiance of ICE as compassion, but Homan and the Trump administration say it’s reckless lawlessness that undermines public safety.
Critics argue that cities sheltering illegal aliens not only flout federal immigration law, but do so at the expense of American taxpayers and struggling families. With the economy under pressure and crime concerns rising in urban areas, the federal government is drawing a red line.
“We’ve had enough,” Homan concluded. “This administration was elected to enforce the law and protect Americans. If local leaders don’t want to help, they’d better stand aside. We’re coming in.”
The message is clear: The era of ignoring federal immigration law with no consequences is over. Sanctuary city officials — and the governors who back them — are on notice. The Trump administration has both the political will and legal backing to act decisively.
And it’s not just a warning. It’s a promise.
