The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has offered to cover travel expenses for House Democrats wishing to visit El Salvador, but with one stipulation: they must livestream their entire trip. This proposition comes after several Democratic lawmakers traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident deported under the Trump administration.
“If out-of-touch House Democrats are so desperate to cozy up to violent gang members, the least they can do is let Americans watch the show,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella stated. “We’ll pay for the plane tickets; they just can’t forget to smile for the camera while they sell out their constituents.”
Democrats, including Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), and Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.), have traveled to El Salvador to press for Abrego Garcia’s return, citing concerns over due process violations. They argue that his deportation was unlawful and that the administration is defying a Supreme Court order mandating his return.
The NRCC’s offer underscores the deep partisan divide over immigration policies and the handling of deportation cases, with Republicans framing the Democrats’ actions as sympathetic to criminals, while Democrats emphasize constitutional rights and legal processes.
