A tragic ambush unfolded during a routine traffic stop in Columbia County, Georgia, on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of one sheriff’s deputy and serious injury to another.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time along Interstate 20 near Belair Road, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). During a press conference, authorities confirmed that the deputies were attempting to serve a domestic violence restraining order to James Blake Montgomery, who was residing in an RV parked along the highway.
Initially, Montgomery appeared cooperative. But as deputies approached his vehicle, he suddenly opened fire without warning, killing Deputy Brandon Sikes, a member of the CCSO’s Crime Suppression Team since 2018. Another deputy, Gavin White, was critically wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains under medical care.
Deputy Sikes’ death marks a devastating loss for the Columbia County law enforcement community. Officials noted that his wife also serves within the Sheriff’s Office, deepening the personal toll of the tragedy.
Following the shooting, Montgomery retreated inside the RV and attempted to flee but was unable to get far. Authorities surrounded the vehicle, deploying police robots and drones for surveillance. Eventually, law enforcement found Montgomery deceased inside the RV, though the exact cause of his death has not yet been publicly disclosed.
In a disturbing twist, investigators also discovered potential pipe bombs and drug paraphernalia inside the RV during their search.
An eyewitness described the harrowing scene to WRDW, saying, “I was just sitting outside when I heard what sounded like firecrackers — pop-pop-pop-pop. Then a few minutes later, sirens everywhere. It turned out there was a full-on shootout right here on I-20.”
Sources told local media that Montgomery, who previously worked in landscaping, had been living apart from his wife — with whom he shares a child — for several months prior to the incident.
Reacting to the tragedy, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp offered his condolences in a statement on X (formerly Twitter):
“Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the loved ones and colleagues of the Columbia County sheriff’s deputy who gave his life in the line of duty, as well as for the recovery of his injured fellow officer. Their bravery reminds us why our law enforcement officers deserve our unwavering respect.”
Meanwhile, Montgomery’s brother-in-law, David Guillebeau, expressed shock and sorrow over what had occurred.
“I haven’t spoken to him in some time, but the man I knew wouldn’t have done this,” Guillebeau told WJBF. “Something clearly changed in him. I’m not excusing it — it’s horrific — but we’re all hurting. The officers have families too, and everyone is grieving.”
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has pledged a full investigation into the shooting, while honoring the bravery and sacrifice of their fallen deputy.
