Former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years in Federal Prison
Former New Jersey senator Bob Menendez was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison after being convicted of corruption charges that included accepting bribes and acting as an unregistered agent for the Egyptian government. The conviction makes Menendez the first U.S. public official found guilty of serving a foreign government while in office.
Speaking outside the courthouse, Menendez denounced the verdict as a “political prosecution,” pointing to former President Donald Trump’s ongoing legal battles as evidence of what he described as a biased justice system.
“President Trump was right… this process is political and corrupt,” Menendez told reporters. He did not say whether he intends to seek a pardon from Trump if the former president returns to office.
Menendez resigned from the Senate last year after losing his position as chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Despite his conviction, sources close to the former senator say he is considering a political comeback—possibly as an independent candidate.
The case marks a dramatic fall for a politician who once wielded significant influence over U.S. foreign policy and domestic legislation, and it has reignited debate over ethics and accountability in Washington.
