Trump Says He’ll Ask King Charles About Report That He’s Related to British Royals: ‘Always Wanted to Live in Buckingham Palace’

In the midst of a historic four-day diplomatic tour, the “Special Relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom appears to have taken a turn for the literal.

President Donald Trump sparked a digital frenzy on Tuesday, April 28, after a genealogical report suggested a biological link between himself and his guest of honor, King Charles III. Reacting to a Daily Mail report on Truth Social, the President posted a screenshot of a detailed family tree tracing both world leaders back to a common ancestor.

“Wow, that’s nice,” the President wrote, punctuating the discovery with his trademark flair for real estate. “I’ve always wanted to live in Buckingham Palace!!! I’ll talk to the King and Queen about this in a few minutes!!!”

While the President may be eyeing a change of address to the iconic 775-room London landmark, the King and Queen Camilla famously maintain Clarence House as their primary London residence, among various other estates across the British Isles.

The genealogical deep-dive published by the Daily Mail posits that the British monarch and the American president are 15th cousins. The lineage reportedly converges at John Stewart, the 3rd Earl of Lennox. A Scottish nobleman who lived from 1490 to 1526, Stewart was the great-grandson of King James II of Scotland.

The bloodline flowing from Stewart’s daughter, Lady Helen Stewart, meanders through generations of Gordons, Mackays, Munros, and MacLeods. The latter is a name of particular significance in this ancestral puzzle: it was the maiden name of the President’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump. According to the BBC, MacLeod immigrated to the United States from Lewis, Scotland, in 1930. Six years later, she married property developer Frederick Trump, the son of German immigrants. Their fourth child, Donald, would eventually ascend to the American presidency.

This revelation of a distant royal connection arrived on the second day of the King’s first official state visit to the U.S. since his 2022 accession. The four-day itinerary is strategically timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Per the U.K. Foreign Office, the mission is designed to underscore “shared prosperity, security and history” between the two nations.

The royal couple launched their Washington, D.C., leg with an elite garden party attended by a “who’s who” of American and British dignitaries. The schedule remains grueling: King Charles is slated to address both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, followed by a high-stakes state dinner at the White House later this evening. The final 48 hours of the tour will see the King and Queen travel to New York City and Virginia, as they continue to navigate a visit that has now added “family reunion” to its official list of accomplishments.
