Warner, best known for playing Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on the iconic NBC sitcom, was pulled under by the current Sunday afternoon. Lifeguards were not on duty at the time. Emergency responders with Costa Rica’s Red Cross arrived around 2:10 p.m., but Warner had no vital signs. CPR was performed for roughly 20 minutes before he was declared dead. His cause of death was confirmed as asphyxiation by submersion.
In a statement to People, authorities emphasized that the injured man was simply a Good Samaritan — a beachgoer who leapt into action when Warner appeared in distress.
The tragedy occurred at Playa Cocles, a beach known for its beauty — and its danger. The area is notorious for strong currents and has long lacked proper safety infrastructure. According to the Caribbean Guard, Costa Rica’s volunteer lifeguard association, lifeguards were not present due to limited resources. Their teams had been redeployed to nearby Playa Negra and Playa Chiquita following other recent aquatic incidents.
“We deeply regret the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner,” the group posted on Facebook. “He was swept away by a strong rip current and died by drowning. It all happened very quickly, and although people entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time.”
They added that while Playa Grande is one of the country’s most challenging beaches, signs warning of “danger of death due to drowning” are posted in both English and Spanish — but without lifeguards, the risks remain high.
Following Warner’s death, the Guard issued a direct appeal to Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles and local municipalities for urgent funding and public policy reform to prevent further tragedies. “Without government help, this will continue to happen,” the group warned.
Warner had been staying in Costa Rica since July 13. His body was discovered near Cocles Beach in the Limon province and will be repatriated by a funeral service authorized by his family.
He is survived by his wife and young daughter, born in 2017.
Warner’s death has sparked grief and disbelief across the entertainment industry. Stars including Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé have expressed heartbreak over the loss of a beloved talent and cultural figure.
Warner rose to fame as Theo Huxtable, the only son of Bill Cosby’s character on The Cosby Show, appearing in all eight seasons from 1984 to 1992. His portrayal — inspired by Cosby’s real-life son, Ennis — earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 and left a lasting impression on viewers, particularly through his storyline involving dyslexia.
After The Cosby Show, Warner continued to build a versatile career in both television and voice acting. He co-starred in Malcolm & Eddie, headlined BET’s Reed Between the Lines, and made appearances on shows like Sons of Anarchy, Jeremiah, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Community. He also lent his voice to The Magic School Bus, playing the iconic Producer character.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further updates are expected as authorities work to clarify the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
