A man from Indiana is facing serious accusations after authorities say he allowed his elderly mother to waste away in her home, ultimately leading to her death.
Randy Halton, 51, was arrested on suspicion of neglect after police allege he failed to care for his mother, Sandra Halton, leaving her so malnourished she was described as “literally skin and bones” at the time of her death, according to court documents obtained by WXIN.
Authorities responded to the family’s home in Greencastle — roughly 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis — on the morning of December 5, 2024, after Halton called for help. Inside the home, officers found Sandra Halton deceased in her bedroom. Her body had taken on a “mummified appearance,” investigators noted.
Troubling Signs and a Disturbing Discovery
Randy Halton reportedly told police his mother had been battling several health issues, though only a thyroid condition was mentioned specifically. He stated that she had been refusing food and drink — including the night before he found her dead — and that he had planned to take her to the hospital the following morning.
However, an autopsy revealed far more alarming details: Sandra Halton’s death was officially ruled as caused by malnutrition. There was no evidence of solid food in her digestive system, and during examination, her skin reportedly peeled away when a bandage was removed — an indication of extreme physical deterioration.
A Long History of Neglect
Investigators digging into the case learned that Sandra Halton’s doctor had not seen or heard from her since February — nearly ten months before her death. Even then, she had been noted as severely underweight at just 105 pounds and diagnosed with anemia.
When questioned why he never brought his mother back to the doctor despite her worsening condition, Randy Halton reportedly told police: “They had not called.”
Allegations of a Cover-Up
Adding to the disturbing narrative, witnesses told investigators that Randy Halton may have attempted to conceal his mother’s death. According to court documents, a former relative reported that Halton instructed a family member to “keep [their] f—ing mouth shut” after informing them of Sandra’s death.
One family member expressed disbelief, telling police they “didn’t understand why Randy didn’t call for help, and that he didn’t have to care for Sandra alone.” Documents revealed that Randy Halton had been his mother’s sole caregiver for several years.
In interviews with police, Halton admitted: “I know she looked bad and horrible,” but insisted she had “seemed fine.”
