NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s ‘rude’ gesture to King Charles during 9/11 Memorial visit

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in New York City this Wednesday, continuing their four-day U.S. state visit. After a two-day stint in Washington D.C. with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania, the royal couple pivoted to Manhattan for a somber visit to the 9/11 Memorial.

While they were warmly received by 9/11 Memorial Chairman Michael Bloomberg and CEO Beth Hillman, the presence of NYC’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, sparked immediate controversy.

The Refusal

Though Mamdani was photographed shaking hands and sharing a brief laugh with the King, he drew a firm line at further engagement. His press secretary, Joe Calvello, confirmed that while the mayor would attend the public wreath-laying ceremony, he explicitly refused a private meeting with the monarch.

The Reason: The Koh-i-Noor Diamond

Mamdani’s distance wasn’t a matter of scheduling, but of principle. When questioned about the lack of a private audience, the Mayor pointed to the British Crown Jewels—specifically the 106-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond.

“If I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond,” Mamdani stated.

The diamond, currently set in the crown of the late Queen Mother, has been a flashpoint for colonial debate for decades. Seized by the British in 1849 from 10-year-old Maharajah Duleep Singh, the “Mountain of Light” remains a symbol of stolen heritage for many critics.

A “Clownish” Performance?

The Mayor’s stance has drawn sharp fire from the NY Post Editorial Board, who labeled the move “performative.” In a scathing critique, the paper wrote:

  • On Mamdani’s Office: “Mamdani’s inexperience is no excuse for letting his personal passions blind him to the duties of his high office.”

  • On the Snub: They described his behavior as a “graceless mistake,” calling him an “addict to performative displays” and a “clown.”

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the matter or the future of the diamond.

What do you think? Is Mayor Mamdani right to use his platform to address colonial history, or is this a “graceless” breach of diplomatic protocol?
