NATO chief Mark Rutte predicts how World War 3 will start

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a stark warning about the potential trigger for World War III, suggesting that coordinated military aggression by China and Russia could push the world into catastrophic conflict.

Speaking during the 2025 NATO Summit held in The Hague, Rutte outlined a grim scenario in which Chinese President Xi Jinping invades Taiwan, while simultaneously Russian President Vladimir Putin launches an attack on NATO territory—effectively forcing the West to fight on two fronts.

“Let’s Not Be Naïve”
In an interview with The New York Times, Rutte stated:

“If Xi Jinping were to attack Taiwan, he would first make sure to call his junior partner in all of this—Vladimir Putin in Moscow—and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to do this. I need you to keep the West busy in Europe by attacking NATO.’”

“That’s most likely how this could unfold,” he warned.

Rutte emphasized that NATO’s best deterrent is twofold:

Maintaining overwhelming collective strength to discourage any Russian aggression.

Deepening cooperation with Indo-Pacific allies—an area of focus championed by President Donald Trump.

Trump, who has been actively involved in backchannel diplomacy aimed at ending conflicts between Israel and Iran as well as Russia and Ukraine, has reportedly pushed for a stronger NATO-Indo-Pacific alliance to counter rising global threats.

A Geopolitical Crisis in Motion
Rutte pointed to what he described as an “enormous geopolitical challenge,” citing Russia’s unprecedented military buildup.

“Russia is rearming at a speed unseen in modern history,” he said.
“They’re producing three times more ammunition in three months than NATO countries do in an entire year.”

He added that Russia is now closely aligned with North Korea, China, and Iran, forming a dangerous coalition that is supporting its ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine.

“The connection between the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is growing stronger, and we know China continues to have its eye on Taiwan.”

Russian Response: Mockery and Threats
Russia didn’t take kindly to Rutte’s remarks. In a sharp and insulting rebuke, Russian state media accused the NATO chief of having “gorged on too many of the magic mushrooms beloved by the Dutch,” and even threatened that Rutte would be better suited to a Siberian prison camp.

Despite the rhetoric, NATO officials remain firm in their stance: a united Western front, bolstered by cooperation across the Atlantic and Pacific, is essential to prevent hostile powers from reshaping the global order through force.

As tensions escalate and alliances harden, Rutte’s warning serves as yet another reminder of how fragile global peace has become—and how quickly a spark in Taiwan or Eastern Europe could ignite a global fire.
