Mom of 8 with Stage 3 Breast Cancer Breaks Down in Tears After Unexpected Call From School Nurse

When Misty De La Cruz discovered a lump during one of her regular self-breast exams in September 2024, she had no idea how profoundly her life — and her family’s — was about to change. The 43-year-old Maryland mother of eight was diagnosed with stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive and hardest-to-treat forms of the disease.

But it wasn’t just the diagnosis that shattered her world. Months into her treatment, De La Cruz received a phone call from her son’s elementary school that left her in tears — and exposed the hidden emotional wounds her illness had carved into her children.

A school nurse told her that her 10-year-old son had been struggling to stay awake in class. When asked why, he confessed: he was afraid to fall asleep at night — terrified that he might wake up and find his mother had died while he slept.
