Just days before his sudden death, actor and cultural commentator Malcolm-Jamal Warner left behind a powerful and deeply personal message in what would become the final episode of his podcast, Not All Hood.
Warner—best known for his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show—passed away at the age of 54 on Sunday, July 20, while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. According to ABC News, Costa Rican National Police confirmed he drowned off the coast, with asphyxia listed as the official cause of death.
Two days earlier, on Friday, July 18, Warner released a new episode of his podcast Not All Hood, appearing alongside cohost Candace Kelly and guest poet and activist Tameka “Georgia Me” Harper. In what now serves as an emotional final message to his listeners, Warner offered a nuanced reflection on the perception of Black identity, the complexity of cultural narratives, and the misunderstood significance of the show’s very title.
He recounted a backstage interaction with Harper at a recent event, where he introduced the podcast’s name, only to be immediately cut off. “I couldn’t even finish my sentence and Georgia’s like, ‘Ain’t nothing wrong with the hood,’” Warner said. That moment, he admitted, stopped him in his tracks.
