In a heated interview on CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday morning, Secretary of State Marco Rubio forcefully defended the Trump administration’s decision to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, pushing back against repeated questions about whether U.S. intelligence had confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader had directly ordered the development of a nuclear weapon.
Margaret Brennan, the show’s host, pressed Rubio on what she framed as a pivotal issue: “Have U.S. intelligence agencies seen evidence that Iran’s Supreme Leader has ordered the weaponization of uranium?” she asked.
Rubio, who also serves as the National Security Advisor, swiftly dismissed the question as beside the point.
“That’s irrelevant,” he said firmly. “I see that question being asked in the media all the time. It’s an irrelevant question. Iran already has everything it needs to build a nuclear weapon. Whether or not the Supreme Leader signed a piece of paper saying ‘begin weaponization’ is meaningless.”
