A horrific incident aboard a luxury superyacht has rocked the international yachting community and the exclusive enclave of Harbour Island in the Bahamas.
Brigido Munoz, a 39-year-old engineer from Mexico, appeared in court this week in Nassau, charged with the brutal murder of 20-year-old South African stewardess Paige Bell. Bell was found dead last Thursday in the engine room of the £100,000-a-week superyacht Far From It, which was moored at Harbour Island at the time.
According to authorities, Paige’s body was discovered partially unclothed with deep slash wounds to her neck and signs of defensive injuries on her arms—suggesting she fought desperately to defend herself from a vicious attack. Police have also stated that the possibility of a sexual assault is under active investigation.
Munoz, who was found near the victim with serious self-inflicted wounds on his arms in what police believe was a suicide attempt, was taken into custody, treated at a nearby clinic, and later charged with murder. He was not asked to enter a plea during his first court appearance before Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley, who ordered that he be held in custody without bail until a scheduled hearing on November 20.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Paige Bell, originally from Johannesburg, had been working as a stewardess aboard the Far From It, a 43-meter charter yacht known for hosting wealthy clientele. She was due to celebrate her 21st birthday on July 14, and a large celebration was reportedly being planned by her family in Durban.
Instead of planning festivities, her family and friends are now grieving an unimaginable loss.
“She was a golden girl,” said one friend. “What happened to her is despicable.”
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the yachting world and the local Bahamian community. Police say they were alerted to the situation shortly after 1 p.m. on July 3, after crew members reported that Paige had not been seen for some time. Responding officers discovered her lifeless body in the engine room, where Munoz was also located in critical condition.
A doctor was brought aboard to confirm her death at the scene.
A Life of Adventure and Light
Paige had previously worked on the motor yacht Sweet Emocean before joining Far From It. Her former colleagues from Sweet Emocean paid tribute in a touching message posted on a GoFundMe page set up to assist her grieving family.
“Paige was more than a teammate; she was family,” they wrote. “Her radiant spirit, infectious laughter, and boundless compassion left an unforgettable impression on everyone lucky enough to know her. Whether during long days at sea or quiet nights under the stars, she brought warmth and light wherever she went.”
The fundraising campaign, which initially sought to raise $16,000, has already exceeded $42,000 as people from around the world contribute to honor her memory and support her loved ones.
In a poignant tribute, Paige’s mother has asked that friends and supporters celebrate her daughter’s birthday by enjoying a slice of red velvet cake—Paige’s favorite—and sharing a photo in her honor.
The Vessel and the Island
Far From It, built in 2008, boasts five luxurious suites and space for up to ten guests. The vessel is operated by a permanent crew of nine and is chartered for £100,000 to £120,000 per week.
Harbour Island, where the tragedy occurred, is a 3-mile-long, ultra-exclusive island known as “The Billionaires’ Backyard.” The island lies 60 miles east of Nassau and just off the larger island of Eleuthera. Among its part-time residents are tech mogul Bill Gates and celebrities like Prince Harry, Mick Jagger, the Kardashians, Harrison Ford, and Tom Cruise.
The shocking murder has brought global attention to the small island and raised questions about safety protocols and background checks aboard luxury charters.
Ongoing Investigation
Bahamian authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Paige’s death, including whether a sexual assault occurred and what led to the attack.
The upcoming court proceedings are expected to reveal more details, but for now, the tragedy has left a deep scar on everyone who knew Paige—and on an industry where such violence is almost unheard of.
As friends, family, and former crewmates struggle to come to terms with the brutal loss, one thing is clear: Paige Bell will be remembered not for the horrific way she died, but for the radiant way she lived.
