In the early morning hours of July 4, as flash floods ripped through Central Texas, 27-year-old Julian Ryan made the ultimate sacrifice to save his loved ones. As water surged through his home near the Guadalupe River, Ryan broke a window to lead his family to safety—severing an artery in the process and dying from his injuries. His family says he died a hero, and the community is remembering him as a man of unmatched courage and love.
Ryan was at home with his fiancée, Christina Wilson, and their children when the sudden, violent flooding hit. The rising waters gave residents almost no time to react. “Trees were thrown like toothpicks,” KHOU reported, describing the destructive force of the storm. Within 20 minutes, water had risen to knee-level inside the house.
“It just started pouring in, and we had to fight the door to keep the water out,” Wilson said. “We went back to the bedroom and started calling 911.”
When it became clear help wasn’t arriving fast enough, Ryan acted. In an effort to get his family out, he smashed through a window—cutting so deeply into his arm that it nearly severed the limb.
“There was so much blood,” Wilson said. “It severed an artery in his arm and almost took it clean off.”
Despite the injury, Ryan remained calm and focused, guiding his fiancée, children, and his mother to safety. But his wound proved fatal. Emergency responders couldn’t reach them in time.
“By 6 a.m., he looked at me and the kids and my mother-in-law and said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m not going to make it. I love y’all,’” Wilson recalled through tears.
Ryan’s body wasn’t recovered until floodwaters finally receded. His final moments were filled with courage, love, and clarity—sacrificing himself so that his family might live.

“He died a hero, and that will never go unnoticed,” said Ryan’s sister, Connie Salas.
Friend Kris Roberts remembered him as “the kindest person I’ve ever met in my life, and I’ll forever love him no matter what.”
