That controversial deal, signed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida, stated that Epstein’s successful compliance with the agreement would protect not just him but also “any potential co-conspirators” from prosecution—though Ghislaine Maxwell was not named explicitly. Epstein paid fines, settled with alleged victims, and served just 13 months in jail.
“A Deal is a Deal,” Says Counsel
David Oscar Marcus, lead counsel for Maxwell, pointed a finger directly at the Trump administration for violating that deal.
“I’d be surprised if President Trump knew his lawyers were asking the Supreme Court to let the government break a deal,” Marcus said. “He’s the ultimate dealmaker. Surely, he’d agree that when the United States gives its word, it should keep it.”
The Maxwell family echoed Marcus’ view, accusing federal prosecutors of sidestepping the original agreement by prosecuting Ghislaine in New York—a jurisdiction that does not necessarily honor agreements made by other districts.
A Growing Rift Inside MAGA
The timing of the statement is no coincidence. MAGA supporters are increasingly furious over Bondi’s recent memo dismissing the idea of a “client list.” Back in February, Bondi told Fox News a list was “on her desk,” but her office has since walked back the claim, clarifying she was referring to general case files—not a detailed roster of powerful elites connected to Epstein.
That has not gone over well with the base.
Allies like Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Megyn Kelly have all publicly demanded transparency and the release of all files related to Epstein’s inner circle. Even House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for full disclosure. Yet House Republicans recently voted—by a razor-thin margin—to block the release of the remaining Epstein documents, fueling suspicions of a cover-up.
The discontent is spilling over into Trump’s own support base, with some wondering aloud whether the president is trying to bury inconvenient truths. His attempt to dismiss questions about Epstein during a press briefing last week—by pivoting to the Texas floods—only added fuel to the fire.
“He promised us answers,” one prominent MAGA influencer wrote on Truth Social. “Instead, we got excuses.”
