A former sorority girl who pepper-sprayed a Muslim Uber driver in a shocking, unprovoked attack last summer has avoided prison time—thanks in large part to the victim’s remarkable act of forgiveness.
Jennifer Guilbeault, 24, pleaded guilty on Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court to a reduced felony charge of aggravated harassment in the second degree. The one-time PR hopeful was initially facing up to 15 years in prison on hate crime charges stemming from the July 31, 2024 assault on Shohel Mahmud, a father of three from Queens.
Guilbeault was caught on dashcam spraying Mahmud in the face with pepper spray after he began praying in Arabic at a red light near Lexington Avenue. The footage, according to Mahmud, also captured her shouting, “He’s brown,” while her own friend pleaded, “Jen, what the f–k are you doing?!”
“I forgive her,” Mahmud told The Post. “She’s almost my kid’s age. I believe in the Judgment Day. If I forgive her, God will forgive me.”
Despite standing by his claim that the attack was racially motivated, Mahmud asked prosecutors not to push for jail time—a decision that swayed the court. Prosecutors admitted the video was not clear enough to confirm Guilbeault’s racial remark beyond doubt.
Instead of prison, Guilbeault will serve 100 hours of community service, undergo therapy, complete anti-bias training, and attend alcohol abuse programs. If she follows through, her felony plea can be downgraded to a non-criminal harassment charge.
Judge Laura Ward accepted the no-jail deal, which factored in Guilbeault’s clean record and her efforts at rehabilitation since the attack.
At the time of the incident, Guilbeault had just landed a job at a Long Island PR firm, but was swiftly fired once the incident made headlines.
Her attorney, Michael Alber, did not respond to requests for comment. He has previously denied that the attack was racially motivated.
