Father mourning loss of baby is murdered while waiting for bus with wife

A man in Arizona is now facing first-degree murder charges after he allegedly attacked and nearly decapitated a stranger with a hatchet at a Tucson bus stop — while the victim’s wife looked on in horror.

Police say 25-year-old Daniel Michael assaulted 32-year-old Jacob Couch and his wife as they sat on the corner of East Broadway Boulevard and South 6th Avenue around 10 a.m. on April 5. The unprovoked assault left Couch with catastrophic injuries that ultimately led to his death on Friday, April 19.

According to authorities, Michael approached the couple and “initiated a confrontation” before suddenly pulling out a sharp-edged weapon and striking Couch in the head. Bystanders rushed to help the wounded man as police and paramedics arrived, but despite hours of surgery, Couch could not be saved.

Witnesses told investigators that Michael struck Couch with a hatchet in a vicious, overhead swing. After the attack, the suspect allegedly fled the scene on a public streetcar. He was identified days later through surveillance footage and arrested at his home, where investigators also recovered additional evidence linked to the crime.

At the time of his arrest, Michael was charged with aggravated assault. Following Couch’s death, prosecutors upgraded the charge to first-degree murder.

Couch and his wife had been in California mourning the loss of their stillborn child and were traveling cross-country by bus back to Alabama when they stopped in Tucson — a tragic coincidence that ended in unimaginable violence.

Jacob’s brother, Luke Couch, told Fox News Digital that the suspect demanded the couple move from the bench, then launched the attack as they began to get up. “He just walked over and swung the hatchet over his head,” Luke said. “It was completely random. Unprovoked. It’s a nightmare.” Now, the family is demanding swift justice.

“I want to make sure this man never does this again,” Luke said. “No other family should have to go through what we’re going through. My brother would’ve protected me without thinking twice — and I couldn’t be there to protect him.” Michael remains in custody as the investigation continues.
