Family, friends seek answers after woman gunned down in car with child in back seat

What was meant to be a joyful birthday weekend turned into a nightmare after 29-year-old Imani Naim was shot and killed while sitting in her car—with an 8-year-old child in the back seat.

It happened last Friday on Ludlow Street, where Imani had just pulled up to drop off her young nephew for a birthday celebration. That’s when a gunman opened fire, unleashing 11 bullets directly through her windshield in what police believe was a targeted hit.

“She didn’t have beef with anyone,” said Tamara Davis, Imani’s cousin. “She was the life of the party, always smiling. A great mom. Just… a good person.”

But for her eight-year-old nephew, the trauma runs deep. He was sitting just feet away in the back seat when the bullets shattered the glass and took Imani’s life. His mother, Sahdee, says it was the first night he’s slept since.

“He’s traumatized,” she said. “He heard the shots and dove to the floor. I just pray he didn’t see everything… that he didn’t see her like that.”

Imani was a mother of four, her youngest child just five months old. Her family gathered Monday night for a tearful balloon release on Newkirk Street, where she grew up — a grim ritual far too common in Philadelphia neighborhoods plagued by gun violence.

Her grandmother, Carmen Bacon, was heartbroken.

“It hurts so bad that they did this to my granddaughter,” she told reporters. “And with my great-grandnephew in the car…”

No arrests have been made. Investigators are still searching for answers — and a motive.

Imani’s mother, Shantia Bacon, is struggling to process the loss of her oldest child.

“I think someone really wanted her gone,” she said. “They did a number on my baby. But I’m just thankful that little boy in the back seat… I’m thankful he wasn’t hurt.”

Now, the family is left asking the same questions the community wants answered: Who did this—and why?

As police work to track down the shooter, Imani’s loved ones are clinging to memories of a vibrant woman whose life was cut short in an act of violence that no one can explain.

“She was just on her way to see me,” said Tamara. “To wake up and hear she’s gone—it still doesn’t feel real. She was sensational.”
