Bill Cosby has broken his silence following the tragic drowning of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor who played his son Theo on The Cosby Show. Warner died Sunday, July 20, at the age of 54 while on a family vacation in Costa Rica.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Cosby’s spokesperson Andrew Wyatt revealed that the news hit the 88-year-old actor especially hard, evoking memories of the night he lost his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was murdered in 1997.
