A Smile, A Rock, A Death: The Chilling Story Behind a Night of Chaos

A Colorado man was found guilty of murder after he hurled a rock off an overpass at a passing car, tragically killing a 20-year-old woman.

Joseph Edwin Koenig, 20, was convicted on all 19 felony counts related to the April 2023 death of Alexa Bartell. According to prosecutors, Koenig and two friends spent the night speeding through Jefferson County — reaching speeds up to 103 mph — and throwing rocks at passing vehicles.

Bartell, who was driving a Chevy Spark, was struck when a 9.3-pound rock smashed through her windshield. Her car veered off the road and crashed into a fence. She died at the scene.

Witness Testimony Reveals Disturbing Details

Koenig’s two companions that night, Nicholas Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak, both took plea deals and testified against him during the trial. Karol-Chik admitted on the stand that Koenig reacted with excitement after the rock struck Bartell’s car, describing how Koenig let out a celebratory whoop and smiled broadly at his friends.

“He was excited. He would just look at us with this big smile on his face,” Karol-Chik told the jury.

Both Karol-Chik and Kwak also admitted their roles in the rock-throwing spree. Karol-Chik pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and crime of violence. Kwak pleaded guilty to multiple assault charges, including first-degree assault tied to Bartell’s death. They are set to be sentenced in May, with Kwak facing a potential prison term of 20 to 32 years.

A Web of Lies Unraveled

During testimony, Karol-Chik also revealed that he and Koenig initially plotted to blame Kwak for the fatal rock throw. Although Karol-Chik at first genuinely believed Kwak was responsible, he ultimately confirmed under oath that it was Koenig who threw the deadly rock.

Koenig is scheduled to be sentenced on June 3.
