House Passes Legislation Mandating Deportation of Illegal Immigrants Who Assault Police Officers
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has approved a significant and controversial measure requiring the federal government to deport any illegal immigrant who commits an assault against a police officer. The legislation passed despite strong opposition from a majority of Democrats, highlighting the deep partisan divide over immigration and law enforcement policies.
The bill, known as the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, was passed by a vote of 265 to 148. While Republicans provided the bulk of the support, 54 Democrats joined them in backing the measure, indicating some bipartisan agreement on the issue. The bill is spearheaded by Representative Jeff Van Drew, a Republican from New Jersey, who has been vocal about the need for stricter enforcement against violent offenders among the illegal immigrant population.
Representative Van Drew firmly stated, “There is no justification for an illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement to remain in our country; such actions demonstrate a complete disregard for our rule of law and institutions, and they will not contribute positively to society.” He framed the bill as a necessary step to protect law enforcement officers and maintain public safety.
The legislation requires federal authorities to detain illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police officers until their deportation can be carried out. Furthermore, it establishes a new category of inadmissibility specifically targeting migrants who have committed or are accused of assaulting law enforcement personnel. Van Drew emphasized that this provision would act as a crucial safeguard to prevent violent individuals from exploiting loopholes in immigration law.
Following the passage of the bill, Representative Tom Emmer, the House Majority Whip and the third-ranking Republican in the chamber, issued a sharp rebuke of Democrats who opposed the measure. Emmer accused House Democrats of prioritizing the protection of violent illegal immigrants over the safety and well-being of law enforcement officers.
“House Democrats have chosen to protect violent illegal immigrants over our courageous law enforcement officers,” Emmer stated. “Once again, the Democrat Party demonstrates that they are the most anti-law enforcement party in history.” His comments underscored the growing polarization between the parties on issues of immigration enforcement and support for police.
Poll Shows Democrats Trailing Republicans on Economic Issues Despite Months of Negative Messaging
In an unexpected political development, a recent poll released by CNN reveals that the Democratic Party is significantly trailing the Republican Party on economic issues. This finding comes as a surprise to many political analysts, given the sustained efforts by Democrats and their media allies to portray former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and economic decisions as dangerous and damaging.
CNN’s political data analyst Harry Enten expressed his astonishment at the apparent ineffectiveness of the Democrats’ messaging campaign concerning the economy. He noted that after months of trying to instill concerns and fears among Americans about the potential negative impacts of Trump’s tariffs and economic strategy, Democrats have failed to secure a commanding lead in public opinion.
“You would expect that after all the turmoil, Kate Bolduan, during the initial months of Donald Trump’s presidency, particularly the first four months, Democrats would have a substantial lead on economic matters. However, that is not the case. It is not the case,” Enten said during an interview with CNN anchor Kate Bolduan.
Enten detailed that as recently as November 2023, polling data showed Republicans leading by 11 points on the question of which party aligned most closely with voters’ economic perspectives. While that lead has narrowed somewhat to an eight-point advantage in more recent polling, it remains within the margin of error, signifying that the Republican Party still holds a clear edge.
“How can this be, Democrats? How is it possible, after all the fears of recession, after the fluctuations in the stock market, after tariffs that are unpopular among Americans, and yet Republicans maintain an eight-point lead regarding the economy? Are you serious?” Enten asked rhetorically.
When Bolduan inquired how this aligns with other polling data, Enten referenced additional findings from Reuters/IPSOS. “Indeed, if this were solely based on one CNN poll, it would be one matter. However, consider the Reuters/IPSOS data. What do we observe here? The party with a superior economic strategy,” he explained.
In May 2024, just prior to Donald Trump’s re-election bid, Republicans held a nine-point lead on economic issues. By May 2025, that advantage had actually increased by three points, giving the Republican Party a 12-point lead on the question of which party has the more effective economic plan.
Enten called this development “noteworthy,” particularly considering the backdrop of ongoing economic uncertainty, including stock market volatility and tariff disputes that remain unpopular with many Americans. “Yet, despite all these factors, the Democrats are trailing by 12 points on economic issues. This highlights the Democratic challenges regarding the economy more effectively than almost any other indicator you could consider,” he said with evident surprise.
He concluded by emphasizing the political implications of the data, noting that the Republicans’ continued economic advantage keeps them highly competitive despite some fluctuations in Donald Trump’s approval ratings.
“The Republicans continue to maintain an edge on this crucial issue of the day. This is why, even if Donald Trump’s approval ratings have dipped slightly, Republicans are still very much in the game, as they retain a distinct advantage on economic matters, whether one examines CNN’s polls or the IPSOS poll, which shows a 12-point lead on the economy,” Enten stated.
