Furor Over Epstein Files Sparks Clash Between Bondi And Bongino At The Justice Department

The Justice Department and FBI are facing a storm of criticism following their decision this week to withhold key records from the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation—an action that has angered prominent far-right influencers and supporters of President Donald Trump.

The backlash intensified after the agencies admitted that one widely anticipated document—a so-called “client list”—never actually existed, despite earlier suggestions to the contrary. That revelation reportedly led to a tense confrontation at the White House between Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, highlighting growing internal divisions and public frustration.

The controversy underscores the broader challenge facing the Justice Department and FBI as they try to navigate the expectations of Trump’s base—expectations that were amplified by repeated hints of explosive revelations and deep-state cover-ups. Many MAGA-aligned activists, already skeptical of federal institutions, now accuse the agencies of stonewalling and demand sweeping accountability.

President Trump himself weighed in over the weekend with a social media post expressing dismay at the infighting.

“What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and, in some cases, ‘gals’?” Trump posted. “They’re all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening.”

Epstein Records Decision Sparks Firestorm
The spark for the latest uproar came on Monday, when the DOJ and FBI released a brief memo concluding that no Epstein “client list” existed, despite earlier claims suggesting one did. The agencies also announced they would not be releasing any additional Epstein-related records, citing legal protections for victims and court-imposed seals.

Although the DOJ did release a video intended to confirm Epstein’s death by suicide in jail, the footage itself raised suspicions due to a missing minute of recording—fueling further conspiracy theories online.

The announcement directly contradicted Bondi’s previous assertion in February that such a list was “on her desk,” and it came months after conservative influencers were handed binders at the White House marked “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” and “Declassified.” Those documents, however, largely consisted of material already in the public domain.

At the time, Bondi claimed she had been told by an FBI source that thousands of previously undisclosed documents existed. She ordered the bureau to release the full contents, stating that officials were reviewing a “truckload” of new evidence. But after months of analysis, the DOJ ultimately decided against further disclosure, stating that only a small fraction of the material would have been made public had Epstein stood trial.

Rift Between Bondi and Bongino Boils Over
The DOJ memo, instead of ending the speculation, ignited internal friction. A private exchange between Bondi and Bongino at the White House the following day turned contentious, according to a source familiar with the conversation.

Fueling the disagreement was a report from NewsNation, which cited a “source close to the White House” claiming the FBI would have released the Epstein files months earlier if allowed to do so. While Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and FBI Director Kash Patel all pushed back on the report, Bongino was notably absent from the denials.

The publication Axios was first to report the White House clash.

Blanche attempted to ease tensions with a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “All of us signed off on the contents of the memo and the conclusions stated in the memo. The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo’s composition and release is patently false.”

Meanwhile, far-right activist Laura Loomer claimed on X that Bongino was “seriously thinking about resigning” and had taken a day off to consider his future. Bongino, a vocal presence online, has not posted since Wednesday.

Fallout and White House Response
The FBI declined to comment on the matter, while the White House issued a statement downplaying any internal rift.

“President Trump has assembled a highly qualified and experienced law and order team dedicated to protecting Americans, holding criminals accountable, and delivering justice to victims,” said spokesperson Harrison Fields. “This work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity. Any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless and distracts from the real progress being made in restoring public safety and pursuing justice for all.”

Still, the uproar from MAGA loyalists over the DOJ’s Epstein decision continues to grow. With Trump supporters increasingly vocal in their disappointment and high-profile influencers demanding transparency, the administration’s handling of the Epstein saga risks undermining its credibility with the very base it has long relied on.

Whether internal tensions between key figures like Bondi and Bongino can be resolved remains uncertain—but for now, the Epstein investigation has become a political flashpoint far beyond the details of the case itself.
