Police in Hialeah, Florida, arrested a woman after a disturbing discovery: two toddlers were found wandering naked through a neighborhood, leading to shocking revelations about their home environment.
According to Miami-Dade County public records, 25-year-old Heidy Teressa Diaz-Torres was taken into custody on Thursday, April 24, two days after the unsettling incident, and now faces a felony charge of child neglect.
The chain of events began around 3:30 p.m. on April 22, when two women in the 700 block of West 37th Street noticed two small children — ages 1 and 3 — roaming the streets alone and without clothes, local outlet WPLG reported. Concerned for their safety, the women approached the toddlers, who were able to communicate where they lived.
Upon escorting the children back to their house, one of the women knocked on a window to alert the caregiver. What happened next left them stunned: according to a police report obtained by WPLG, the children’s mother — later identified as Diaz-Torres — simply shrugged and waved them off through the window, showing little concern for the situation.
Alarmed by the mother’s response, the women immediately contacted law enforcement. When officers arrived at the residence, they witnessed the children once again stepping outside unsupervised, with no sign of an adult nearby.
Fearing for the children’s safety, officers entered the home. Inside, they found Diaz-Torres, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. In plain sight, police also discovered two pipes with residue suspected to be methamphetamine, according to the arrest report.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, authorities quickly contacted child protective services to intervene.
Diaz-Torres was arrested on felony charges of child neglect and remains under investigation. Meanwhile, the toddlers are now in the care of child services as the case proceeds.
