Maryland NICU Babies Get Dressed Up in Adorable Costumes to Help Celebrate Spring

The transition into spring is taking on a heart-melting form at the University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital, where the smallest patients are officially ready to welcome the season.
In what has become a cherished tradition of care, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is ushering in the warmer months by dressing its infants as “spring personified.” From garden-fresh vegetables to blooming perennials, the unit has been transformed into a living gallery of seasonal hope.

Among the tiny participants, infants were photographed styled as carrots and heads of lettuce, while others were adorned in floral-themed ensembles. In one particularly poignant scene, a sleeping infant lay nestled in a wicker basket accented by a string of Easter egg lights; a plush white bunny and a scattering of plastic eggs completed the tranquil tableau.

The spirit of the season was also a family affair. One set of twins posed for the camera in coordinated green outfits featuring the playful slogan, “Lettuce be hap-pea.” To round out the theme, stuffed carrots were carefully positioned alongside the pair to match the graphics on their shirts.

The floral category offered its own share of “aww” moments. One infant was captured mid-slumber wearing a pink tutu and matching flower hair bows. Resting on a bedsheet patterned with blossoms and framed by the soft glow of rainbow lights, she served as a perfect symbol of the season’s new beginnings.

According to reporting from WMAR 2, hospital officials emphasized that these curated moments offer more than just a photo opportunity. The NICU nurses, who personally dressed each baby to foster a sense of spring spirit, noted that such gestures provide families with a much-needed sense of hope and comfort during the complexities of a long-term hospital stay.
