The host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! is standing firm behind a joke directed at First Lady Melania Trump, even as President Donald Trump and his senior administration officials intensify their calls for his immediate termination.
The controversy stems from Kimmel’s “alternative” White House Correspondents’ Dinner monologue, a segment the host launched on the premise that “typically, somebody funny shows up” to the annual event—a standard he suggested was not met this year. During the broadcast, Kimmel quipped that the First Lady possessed “a glow like an expectant widow.”
The fallout was swift. Melania Trump publicly urged ABC to “take a stand” against what she characterized as “hateful and violent rhetoric.” By Monday, the 79-year-old President had taken to Truth Social to demand that Disney and ABC—the network home of Jimmy Kimmel Live! since its 2003 inception—sever ties with the host immediately.
“I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale,” the President wrote.
Addressing the firestorm during his Monday monologue, Kimmel dismissed the administration’s narrative that his comedy incited the violence that occurred two days later, when a gunman opened fire at the actual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Kimmel defended the remark as a “very light roast joke” centered on the age gap between the President and the 56-year-old First Lady.
“It was not by any stretch a call to assassination and they know that,” Kimmel argued, citing his long history as a vocal advocate against gun violence. While he offered no apology for the comedic content, he did express sympathy for those present during the weekend’s shooting. “I am sorry that everyone in that room on Saturday went through that,” he said. “Just ’cause no one got killed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic and scary,” he added, before calling for the country to “come together.”
The reprieve was short-lived. By Tuesday, April 28, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung intensified the administration’s rhetoric, labeling the 58-year-old host a “s— human being” in a scathing post on X. Cheung accused Kimmel of making a “disgusting joke about assassinating the President” and criticized him for “doubling down” rather than apologizing. “ABC needs to fire him immediately and he should be shunned for the rest of his life,” Cheung stated.
This confrontation marks the second time in recent months that Kimmel’s position has been jeopardized by political friction. On September 17, his show was temporarily pulled from the air following controversial remarks regarding the death of Charlie Kirk. That incident prompted FCC Chair Brendan Carr to threaten action against the network for its stance on the Trump administration. Kimmel ultimately returned to the airwaves after a six-day hiatus.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! continues to air weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC.
