Trump set to make millions by renaming Florida airport after himself

In a move that blends civic infrastructure with the high-stakes world of private branding, Palm Beach International Airport is on the verge of a historic identity shift. Following a razor-thin 4-3 vote by the Palm Beach County Commission on Tuesday, the facility is slated to be rechristened the President Donald J. Trump International Airport—a transition that carries far more weight than a mere change in signage.

The rebranding, mandated by legislation recently signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, is scheduled to take effect on July 1, pending a final green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Yet, as the dust settles on the commission’s decision, critics and legal experts are pointing to a sophisticated licensing agreement that could transform the public transit hub into a lucrative engine for the Trump Organization.

The Logo Reveal and a Son’s Pride

The news gained momentum on May 6 when Eric Trump took to X (formerly Twitter) to unveil the airport’s official new visual identity to his millions of followers.

“For the first time, I am extremely proud to share the OFFICIAL logo for the Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida,” Eric Trump wrote. “Commissioners in Palm Beach County have approved the licensing agreement with Trump’s family business. There is no person more deserving of this incredible honor than @realDonaldTrump! Congratulations Dad! Looking forward to seeing flights landing at ‘DJT’ very, very soon!”

“Bigger and Better”: Trump’s Vision for the Tarmac

The former president has not been shy about his ambitions for the site. Speaking earlier this month at the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches, Donald Trump teased a radical expansion of the facility’s scope.

“We have a lot of things in store. A lot of tremendous elements are going to be added to the airport, making it bigger and better,” Trump told the audience. “I don’t think there’ll be anything as good as your airport will be anywhere in the country.”

The “Loophole” in the Fine Print

While the county retains the right to display the name on terminals and official collateral, the legal architecture of the deal ensures the Trump Organization maintains a firm grip on the “Donald J. Trump International Airport” brand. This intellectual property arrangement allows the Trump family business to leverage the airport’s name for external ventures and grants them a unique level of control over the airport’s internal commerce.

According to reporting by the Miami Herald, a specific “loophole” in the licensing agreement allows the Trump Organization to curate a list of “approved retailers.” Under this framework, any shop operating within the airport must source its branded merchandise—including potentially lucrative MAGA-themed apparel—exclusively from entities designated by the licensor, DTTM Operations, LLC.

Legal Scrutiny: Control Beyond the Gates

While the agreement ostensibly prevents the Trump family from profiting directly from the immediate sale of these goods, it grants them the power to choose the manufacturers. Experts suggest this is a distinction with a massive financial difference.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben noted the unusual nature of the contract in an interview with the Herald.

“Normally a license agreement says that the goods have to be of a certain quality,” Gerben explained. “It doesn’t say that you have to purchase them from a retailer that we’re approving them from.”

Gerben further highlighted that the agreement offers no restrictions on the Trump family profiting from merchandise sold outside the airport’s physical boundaries. This creates a scenario where the “DJT” airport brand functions as a global marketing vehicle for the family’s private business interests, far beyond the runways of West Palm Beach.
