The sole rebel Republican who voted to release Epstein files in bold move defying Trump’s administration

In a dramatic twist that rattled Capitol Hill and caught the eye of frustrated MAGA voters, a single Republican lawmaker crossed party lines this week to demand the full release of the secretive Jeffrey Epstein files—defying President Donald Trump’s administration and exposing deep fractures within the GOP on one of the most controversial sagas of the century.

California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna ignited the firestorm after introducing a surprise amendment to upcoming crypto legislation that would have compelled Attorney General Pam Bondi to make the full trove of Epstein-related files public within 30 days—placing them on a publicly accessible website for the world to see.

The proposal—bold, explosive, and politically risky—was narrowly defeated by a 5–7 vote during a late-night session of the House Rules Committee. The failed vote means that, for now, the Epstein documents remain sealed at the Department of Justice—despite Trump’s previous campaign promises to release them “in full.”

One Republican Defies Trump—and the Establishment

South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman, a hardliner and member of the House Freedom Caucus, stunned many on his own side by siding with Democrats to support Khanna’s amendment. Norman’s move was nothing short of rebellious—and potentially career-defining—as it openly clashed with Trump’s Cabinet and party leadership, both of whom have repeatedly attempted to downplay the Epstein story.

Adding fuel to the fire, Texas Republican Chip Roy—also a Freedom Caucus member—opted not to vote at all, seemingly sidestepping the political grenade entirely. His silence only intensified suspicion among constituents desperate for transparency about who was connected to Epstein’s web of elites.

Even if Roy had joined Norman and the Democrats, the amendment still would have failed by a single vote—but it would’ve sent a powerful message.

Khanna Reacts: ‘People Are Fed Up’

Following the failed vote, Rep. Khanna expressed his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Rules voted 5–7 to block the full House from voting on my amendment to have a FULL release of the Epstein file. People are fed up. Thanks @RepRalphNorman. Need to put the American people before party!”

And many Americans are indeed fed up. Among Trump’s own supporters, there’s growing concern—and even outrage—over the administration’s reluctance to pull back the curtain on Epstein’s connections.

DOJ Backpedals on ‘Client List’

Earlier this year, Attorney General Pam Bondi stoked anticipation when she told reporters that Epstein’s infamous “client list” was sitting on her desk. But just last week, the Department of Justice and the FBI released a joint statement claiming that no such list exists—an abrupt reversal that has baffled and enraged observers on both sides of the aisle.

“This is not transparency,” said one Republican aide. “This is an orchestrated blackout.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene Sounds the Alarm

Firebrand Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., didn’t mince words after the vote.

“America deserves the truth about Jeffrey Epstein and the rich powerful elites in his circle,” she posted.
“The line is drawn with anyone who abuses children and vulnerable innocent people. When George Santos is going to prison for 7 years but Epstein only served 13 months, our justice system is CORRUPT!!!”

Greene’s comments tapped into a deep well of public anger—particularly among Trump supporters who feel betrayed by what they see as a retreat from accountability and justice.

Trump Backpedals, Then Deflects

While Trump has repeatedly pledged to release Epstein files if elected, his recent comments suggested a sharp pivot away from the issue.

“Are people still talking about this creep? That is unbelievable!” Trump said dismissively during a press Q&A last week, visibly annoyed by a question about the ongoing Epstein investigation.

Later, on his Truth Social platform, Trump blasted critics and even seemed to mock the outrage, writing:

“We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening. We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.”

White House Influencers Duped by Recycled Files

In a bizarre twist earlier this year, the White House invited several social media influencers to review what they claimed were “never-before-seen” Epstein files. But according to follow-up investigations, the documents were simply older, previously released files—prompting some to accuse the administration of orchestrating a distraction.

The Bottom Line: A Powder Keg Waiting to Blow

The failed vote may have buried the Epstein files for now—but the political fallout is far from over. Republican infighting, voter frustration, and unresolved questions about who knew what—and when—continue to swirl around the scandal like a storm cloud.

With one lawmaker already defying Trump and others quietly ducking for cover, the fight over Epstein’s secrets is far from settled. And the next push for answers could be even more explosive.
