Superyacht ‘murder’ horror – ‘Golden girl’ crew member, 20, is found dead on $140,000-a-week vessel moored off Bahamas

The luxury and glamour of the yachting world were shattered last week when 20-year-old Paige Bell, a vibrant young stewardess from Johannesburg, South Africa, was found dead aboard the superyacht Far From It, docked at the elite Harbour Island marina in the Bahamas.

Just days away from her 21st birthday, which her family in Durban had been planning to celebrate in style, Paige was discovered lifeless in the yacht’s engine room on July 3, sparking a murder investigation that has rocked the ultra-wealthy resort enclave.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, a 39-year-old Mexican national was arrested at the scene with what authorities described as self-inflicted injuries to his arm in a suspected suicide attempt. He has now been formally charged with murder and is expected to appear in court.

Police say they were called to the vessel around 1:15 p.m. after Paige had reportedly not been seen for a short time. Officers found her unresponsive with visible injuries. A doctor pronounced her dead on the scene, near the injured suspect who was immediately taken into custody and treated at a local clinic before being transferred for formal charges.

The details of what happened in the moments leading up to Paige’s death remain under active investigation.

Described by loved ones as a “golden girl” with a radiant smile and a heart full of warmth, Paige was working aboard Far From It—a 43-meter, £100,000-a-week charter yacht offering luxury getaways to the world’s elite. The vessel features five lavish suites, hosts up to 10 guests, and employs nine full-time crew members.

Before joining Far From It, Paige had worked aboard another superyacht, Sweet Emocean, until December 2024. Her former crewmates, now devastated, penned a heartfelt tribute posted on a GoFundMe page set up to support her family.

“Paige was more than a teammate, she was family,” read the tribute from her fellow crew. “Her radiant spirit, infectious laughter, and boundless compassion made an unforgettable impact on everyone lucky enough to know her.”

In honor of what would have been her 21st birthday on July 14, Paige’s mother has asked that people across the globe eat red velvet cake—her daughter’s favorite—and share photos in memory of the bright light she was.

The GoFundMe campaign quickly surpassed its $16,000 target, raising over $42,000 as tributes poured in from those who had sailed with Paige and knew her vibrant, kind soul.

Harbour Island, where the tragedy took place, is known as the “Billionaires’ Backyard”—a 3-mile-long haven for the rich and famous located 60 miles east of Nassau. With residents like Bill Gates and frequent visitors such as Tom Cruise, Mick Jagger, the Kardashians, Prince Harry, and Tom Hanks, the island is no stranger to luxury—but last week’s horror has cast a dark shadow over its pristine waters.

A friend who knew Paige well summed up the heartbreak, calling her “a golden girl” and describing what happened as “despicable.”

The global yachting community is now in mourning, as questions remain and justice begins its course. Paige Bell’s life was short, but her impact—like her smile—was immense.
