In 2021, a deeply tragic discovery was made in Middlesbrough: 67-year-old Shirley Nunn and her 50-year-old son Steven were found dead in their home. According to a recent investigation, this devastating outcome might have been preventable.
Shirley had been Steven’s full-time caregiver ever since he suffered brain damage at the age of 11. Over the decades, she devoted her life to supporting him through numerous challenges, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and profound learning disabilities. When Shirley was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October 2021, her greatest fear was not her own death—but what would happen to Steven without her.
Two years before their deaths, Shirley’s husband died from cancer, leaving her entirely alone in caring for their son. Although some support came from adult social care services, Shirley carried the burden of caregiving largely by herself.
The emotional and physical toll was immense. A Domestic Homicide Review later revealed that in the final weeks of her life, Shirley struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts—red flags that were tragically overlooked.
