What was supposed to be a routine family photo session turned into a once-in-a-lifetime moment for a Virginia family visiting Washington, D.C.
While taking springtime pictures near the iconic cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin, Portia Moore and her family were stunned to discover that one of their shots featured an unexpected—and very famous—guest in the background: former President Barack Obama.
Moore and her husband were capturing sweet moments of their young children, Belle, 4, and Preston, 1, with the blooming cherry trees and the Washington Monument behind them when the unthinkable happened. As they posed for photos, Obama happened to stroll past the scene, unintentionally photobombing the family’s portrait.
Unaware at first, Portia didn’t realize what had happened until after the photos were taken. “I asked my husband what he was saying during the shoot because I heard him reacting to something,” she later recalled. “He said, ‘That was President Obama!’ I couldn’t believe it.”
The magical moment was captured by photographer Briana Inell, who has spent more than a decade photographing families and couples in the area during peak bloom. Inell said she’s accustomed to tourists wandering into shots—but this was a first. “You expect crowds this time of year, but you don’t expect a former president,” she said, laughing. “It was surreal.”
The former president later acknowledged the chance encounter with his signature charm. Taking to social media, Obama wrote, “Couldn’t resist a stroll during peak bloom! It’s always fun to play tourist again—and the cherry blossoms never disappoint.”
He also offered a good-natured apology for the unintentional photobomb, jokingly noting that he hoped he didn’t ruin the family’s moment.
But for the Moores, Obama’s appearance was anything but an intrusion.
“Now we have the most unforgettable photo ever,” Portia shared on Instagram alongside the snapshot. “What are the chances? The kids will have an incredible story to tell for the rest of their lives.”
What began as a simple spring outing turned into an iconic memory—thanks to perfect timing, beautiful scenery, and a surprise visit from the 44th President of the United States.
