Pennsylvania Democrat faces backlash from own party after backing…

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Fetterman posted: “This parade is comprised of our sons, daughters, mothers and fathers — the very best of us. Regardless of your politics, it’s appropriate to celebrate the 250 years of sacrifice, dedication and service.”

The parade, held in Washington, D.C., marked the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and drew thousands to the nation’s capital. The event featured military flyovers, a performance by the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, historic World War II Jeeps, and even tanks rolling down Constitution Avenue. Trump, presiding over the event, praised the armed forces while invoking the sacrifices made by service members across generations.

“Every other country celebrates their victories. It’s about time America did, too — that’s what we’re doing tonight,” Trump said, addressing the crowd.
“We remember the soldiers who gave their lives for this country — from the revolution to the war on terror — and we honor their legacy alongside the Gold Star families here tonight.”

Fetterman’s statement sparked controversy, especially among progressive activists. During a “No Kings” protest in Philadelphia, the senator was openly booed. The protest — one of several held nationwide on the same day as the parade — was organized in opposition to Trump and what demonstrators claim is an erosion of democratic norms. The event was attended by thousands and received backing from figures like Walmart heiress Christy Walton.

Speaking at the Philadelphia rally, Leah Greenberg, co-founder of the progressive group Indivisible, criticized Democratic leaders she accused of compromising their values.

“Even today, there are folks among the Democratic Party who think we should roll over and play dead. Anyone seen John Fetterman here today?” she asked, prompting loud boos from the crowd.

Once a progressive favorite, Fetterman has faced increasing criticism from the left in recent months, particularly for his staunch pro-Israel stance and support for tighter immigration policies. His divergence from the party line, coupled with his continued recovery from a 2022 stroke, has led to speculation and controversy.

Recently, New York Magazine published a critical profile featuring anonymous former staffers who accused Fetterman of being erratic and missing Senate votes. Fetterman dismissed the report as a politically motivated “hit piece,” telling Bill Maher in a Saturday interview that former aides had “weaponized” his health for ideological reasons.

“What happened after Israel, and the border, and some of the times I have to disagree with my party — that’s what led to the canceling,” Fetterman told Maher.
“I’ve made 90% of the votes. None of them were determinative. Others have missed more than I did. But I broke the narrative, so they weaponized it.”

Despite the pushback, Fetterman’s stance on the military parade may resonate with a broader swath of voters — particularly independents and moderate Democrats — who view patriotism and military service as issues that transcend party lines. Whether his unorthodox positions will strengthen or isolate him further within his party remains to be seen.
