The teen — whose name is withheld because of his age — is charged with killing his father Mark Humiston, 43, his mother Sarah, 42, and siblings Benjamin, 13, Joshua, 9, and Katheryn, 7, in October 2024. His 11-year-old sister survived by pretending to be dead before escaping through a bedroom “fire window” and sprinting barefoot to a neighbor’s house in the night.
A Survivalist Fortress
Defense lawyers say the Humistons were deeply religious extremists who homeschooled their children, dictated who they could befriend, distrusted the government, and rejected mainstream medical care — including harboring fierce suspicions about the COVID-19 vaccine. The children, attorneys claim, were kept under a “rigid, militant survivalist ideology” and had access to firearms.
Family members painted an even darker picture. Sarah Humiston’s mother told police her daughter was “abusive and demeaning” toward the children and admitted she had threatened to report her if it didn’t stop. Neighbors and relatives told investigators the children rarely interacted with anyone outside a tight circle of families from their church.
A Chilling Night
Prosecutors allege the teen slaughtered his family, then called 911 to falsely claim his younger brother Benjamin had committed the murders before killing himself after being caught watching pornography. Investigators say he staged the crime scene to frame Benjamin — but the surviving sister told detectives she witnessed her 15-year-old brother gunning down family members, checking their pulses to confirm they were dead, and even leaning over their bodies to touch their blood.
When he entered her bedroom, she shut her eyes, held her breath, and stayed still until he left — then crawled out the window to flee.
The Legal Battle Ahead
The teen’s lawyers argue he was raised in a psychologically abusive, isolated environment and was known to be “kind, respectful, and deeply devoted” to his family before the killings. They have asked for more time to build their defense.
Prosecutors, however, want him tried as an adult, calling the attack a calculated, cold-blooded mass murder.
