At least 11 people were stabbed during a violent attack at a Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which occurred just after 5 p.m. on Crossing Circle, sent terrified shoppers fleeing for safety as a suspect wielding a knife attacked multiple victims inside the store.
Authorities confirmed that at least three of the victims sustained critical injuries requiring surgery. Emergency responders rushed the wounded to Munson Medical Center, where staff reported an unusually high volume of patients following the attack.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene and is currently in custody. While the motive behind the attack has not been disclosed, local and federal law enforcement, including personnel from the FBI, are assisting the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and fear, with many customers running for the exits. One witness, posting on X (formerly Twitter), reported the attack happened near the pharmacy area, and several of the victims appeared to be elderly. First responders were seen applying tourniquets and administering first aid immediately after the assault.
Following the incident, police were seen speaking with employees of the supermarket, many of whom were still wearing their Walmart uniforms. A corporate spokesperson for Walmart, Joe Pennington, said the company is cooperating fully with the investigation and referred questions to law enforcement.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences and concern on social media, writing, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

Munson Healthcare, which manages Munson Medical Center, also issued a statement acknowledging the tragedy: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action. We are working with local authorities to ensure the best possible care for those impacted.”
The Michigan State Police confirmed the stabbing and urged drivers to avoid the area while the investigation remains active. They reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
Traverse City, a popular vacation destination along Lake Michigan known for its cherry festival and scenic wineries, is located about 25 miles from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The attack has left the tight-knit community shocked and grieving.
