Official Says Democrats Are Manufacturing Outrage Over Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Detention Facility
Florida’s top emergency management official is pushing back against what he calls political theater surrounding the state’s controversial new detention center — nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz” for its remote location deep in the Everglades.
Kevin Guthrie, Executive Director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, told Jesse Watters Primetime that Democrats deliberately tried to stage outrage during a bipartisan tour of the facility over the weekend.
“Absolutely,” Guthrie said when asked if attendees were looking for problems to exploit. “One of my favorites was an individual who had an infrared thermometer and pointed it at a light bulb. And it was 110 degrees. I said, ‘Let’s actually pull that down to where the ambient air is at, and not point it at the light bulb.’”
He added that lawmakers also tried to spark controversy over basic amenities, including the standard lock-up toilet-sink combination used in secure facilities nationwide.
“This is a standard lock-up toilet system that’s in any secured facility,” Guthrie explained. “There is a sink there, there is a toilet there. Whether you’re brushing your teeth or using the restroom, it’s a restroom. That’s what people do.”
One of the more bizarre flashpoints involved a turkey sandwich. Florida Democrat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz reportedly described it as “gray” — without even opening the wrapper.
“That might be one of my favorites,” Guthrie said. “She was about six feet away from the turkey sandwich box, that was in a wrapper, so I don’t know how she could tell it was gray. But let’s be honest — hospital food, school lunches under Michelle Obama’s program — it’s the same thing. Nobody’s getting filet mignon.”
For Guthrie and other DeSantis administration officials, the complaints are less about genuine concern for conditions and more about political opposition to Florida’s stepped-up immigration enforcement.
“Here’s the bottom line,” Guthrie said. “Democrats aren’t upset about conditions — they’re upset that we’re actually enforcing immigration law. If you break federal immigration law — and especially if you commit a violent crime — you’re not getting a resort stay and a gift card. You’re getting a cell. It’s not supposed to be comfortable. It’s supposed to be a consequence.”
Democrats, however, tell a different story. They argue that the DeSantis administration has tried to block legitimate oversight. In a joint statement reported by The Hill and The Associated Press, several lawmakers said:
“The DeSantis Administration’s refusal to let us in wasn’t some bureaucratic misstep. It was a deliberate obstruction meant to hide what’s really happening behind those gates.”
Over the weekend, lawmakers were turned away from the facility and have since filed a lawsuit with the state Supreme Court against DeSantis and Guthrie, arguing that state law does not allow the governor to overrule the Legislature’s oversight authority.
“There is no statute that permits the Governor to overrule the Legislature’s oversight authority,” their statement read. “This lawsuit is about defending the rule of law, protecting vulnerable people inside that facility, and stopping the normalization of executive overreach.”
The DeSantis administration has dismissed the suit as “dumb” and “frivolous.”
Critics of the Democrats say their rhetoric is exaggerated and ignores their long-standing tendency to defend illegal immigrants over American citizens. Supporters of the facility point to what they call a pattern of Democratic lawmakers undermining Immigration and Customs Enforcement and even inciting hostility toward ICE agents.
Meanwhile, both the White House and Governor DeSantis are urging other Republican-led states to adopt Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” model — a highly secure, isolated detention center designed to house illegal immigrants far from major population centers.
