In an interview with The Detroit Free Press, Pelosi said she expects Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor and ex-White House chief of staff, to consider a presidential run.
The feature began with an interview with Emanuel himself, who didn’t deny the possibility of a campaign. Instead, he emphasized the need for Democrats to reconnect with voters on core economic issues.
“We can’t get distracted by cultural issues and lose sight of what Americans care about—what impacts them—which is a shot at the American Dream,” Emanuel said.
“We’ve got to stand up to special interests. We can’t look weak and woke—we need to be grounded and centered.” The phrase “weak and woke” is one he’s been repeating frequently in recent appearances.
When asked directly about a potential 2028 presidential bid, Emanuel offered a careful but telling response.
“Before I make a decision, I want to know that I have an answer to what I think ails our country, ails our politics, and ails the party—and they may all be the same answer,” he said. “I know what I want to do. We’ve got to get ready to fight for America—and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Pelosi, who’s known Emanuel since his days in the Clinton administration, didn’t hesitate when asked whether she thought he’d run.
“I think so,” she said.
But while some Democrats are looking toward a centrist like Emanuel, former President Donald Trump has his eyes—and his jabs—fixed on the party’s progressive flank.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump mocked the Democrats’ poor showing in the 2024 election and sarcastically suggested they go all in on the far left for 2028.
“After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election, the Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate Jasmine Crockett for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President and three High-Level Members of the Cabinet,” Trump wrote.
He added: “Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!”
Trump’s remarks came after weeks of criticism from Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett, both of whom have attacked the former president’s immigration policies, economic agenda, and military actions—particularly his recent strike on Iran, which Ocasio-Cortez argued warranted impeachment for bypassing Congress.
Trump didn’t hold back in further attacks, especially against Mamdani, the democratic socialist who recently defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor.
“It’s finally happened. The Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump said. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary and is on his way to becoming Mayor.”
He went on to insult Mamdani’s appearance, intelligence, and political backing.
“We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” he wrote. “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3—Dummies ALL—backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”
Meanwhile, Crockett recently withdrew from contention to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, a panel investigating President Joe Biden’s mental fitness. The firebrand Texas congresswoman had been vying for the ranking member position but stepped aside just as Trump’s attacks on her intensified.
As 2028 speculation begins to heat up, the Democratic Party faces a growing divide between its centrist leadership and its insurgent progressive base—while Trump continues to stoke the flames from the sidelines.
