Inside the dark history of town where college student, 22, was found dead as family issues gut-wrenching statement

The mysterious death of 22-year-old graduate student Eliotte Heinz has cast a dark shadow over La Crosse, Wisconsin, a city haunted by a troubling history of similar tragedies spanning nearly three decades.

Heinz vanished early Sunday morning after a night of drinking with friends. Surveillance footage captured her walking alone near the Mississippi River waterfront at 3:22 a.m., dressed in a white T-shirt and denim shorts, seemingly holding a cellphone.

Her body was found four days later, more than 10 miles downstream near Brownsville, Minnesota, by a fisherman. She was floating face down in the water, her body wrapped in duckweed.
