A fierce political firestorm has erupted within Republican ranks after President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on Congressman Thomas Massie, the Kentucky libertarian-leaning Republican who criticized the legality of Trump’s airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The public fallout, which unfolded Sunday across social media and national media appearances, has opened a clear fault line in the GOP between hardline America First loyalists and constitutional conservatives.
The controversy began when Massie responded swiftly to Trump’s Saturday night military operation targeting three key Iranian nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — calling it a breach of the Constitution. “The strike was not constitutional,” Massie wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Congress alone has the authority to declare war. This sets a dangerous precedent.” He further elaborated on CNN’s Inside Politics Sunday, warning that the decision could backfire politically. “I think this could cost Republicans the House majority,” Massie said. “We promised to avoid endless wars. This was a promise broken.”
Trump, never one to let criticism go unanswered — especially from within his own party — exploded on Truth Social in a lengthy takedown that questioned Massie’s loyalty to the MAGA movement and his commitment to American military strength.
“Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is not MAGA, even though he likes to say he is,” Trump wrote. “Actually, MAGA doesn’t want him, doesn’t know him, and doesn’t respect him. He is a negative force who almost always votes ‘NO,’ no matter how good something may be.”
