U.S. national security officials are raising red flags over the heightened risk of Iranian sleeper cells operating within American borders, just hours after President Donald Trump ordered the destruction of three major nuclear facilities in Iran under Operation Midnight Hammer.
Shortly after President Trump addressed the nation about the strikes—which targeted Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—the Department of Homeland Security issued a nationwide alert warning of a “heightened threat environment” inside the United States. While the alert did not cite specific plots, it referenced Iran’s repeated threats of retaliation following the severe setback to its nuclear program.
According to a new bulletin from the National Terrorism Advisory System, the possibility of retaliation now extends far beyond cyberattacks or international proxy strikes. The Department of Homeland Security warned that individuals or groups inside the U.S. could mobilize in response to Iranian leadership calls for revenge. “The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if the Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence,” the bulletin noted.
