Former Senator Bob Menendez Reports to Prison After Bribery Conviction
MINERSVILLE, Pa. — Former New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, 71, has reported to Federal Correctional Institution Schuylkill in eastern Pennsylvania to begin serving an 11-year sentence for his conviction on federal bribery and corruption charges.
Menendez arrived at the facility—located about 120 miles from New York City—on June 17, 2025, following a brief delay granted by the court. His legal team had previously requested more time so he could support his wife, Nadine Menendez, who is also facing prison time after being convicted in a related case earlier this year.
The “Gold Bar” Scandal
Menendez, once a powerful figure in the U.S. Senate, was found guilty in July 2024 on all 16 counts, including bribery, fraud, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent. The charges stemmed from a scheme in which Menendez allegedly accepted gold bars, cash, and luxury gifts from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for political favors.
During a 2022 FBI raid on his home, investigators discovered nearly $480,000 in cash—some of it hidden in clothing and closets—alongside gold bars worth about $150,000 and a Mercedes-Benz convertible.
Federal prosecutors said Menendez used his influence to benefit the governments of Egypt and Qatar, and attempted to interfere with criminal investigations involving his associates. Some of the payments were funneled through a shell consulting company linked to his wife.
The scandal earned Menendez the informal nickname “Gold Bar Bob” in media coverage.
From Political Power to Prison Camp
Once a prominent figure on Capitol Hill, Menendez served as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and spent decades in public office. At his January 2025 sentencing, the court acknowledged his past public service but cited the “brazen” nature of the bribery scheme.
The federal prison in Schuylkill includes a minimum-security satellite camp, where Menendez is expected to serve his sentence due to the white-collar nature of his offenses.
A recent appeal by Menendez to remain free on bail while contesting his conviction was rejected by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, clearing the way for him to begin his term.
Nadine Menendez Also Convicted
Nadine Menendez was convicted in April 2025 of charges related to the same bribery scheme and is scheduled to begin her own prison sentence later this year.
