Speaking to local media, White’s family questioned why the bystander used lethal force, arguing that he should have avoided getting involved. “He could have turned around and gone the other way,” a relative said. “Instead, he chose to shoot.”
Legal experts, however, have pointed out that under self-defense and defense-of-others statutes, the Good Samaritan acted within his rights. White had entered the store armed, threatened lives, and ignored a clear verbal warning.
Investigators also emphasized that the bystander acted in response to a credible and immediate threat, citing White’s actions—waving his gun and pointing it at employees—as justification for the defensive use of force.
The armed citizen, who asked to remain anonymous, told investigators this was the first time he had ever had to use his concealed weapon and expressed regret that the situation had come to gunfire.
While the precise location of White’s gunshot wounds has not been disclosed, he remains in stable condition and is expected to recover. Authorities noted that while White may not have left the scene unscathed, he was fortunate to survive the encounter.
“Bringing a gun into a robbery is always a gamble,” one officer stated. “He’s lucky to be alive.”
