Emilie Dequenne, the acclaimed Belgian actress best known for her role in the BBC drama The Missing, has died at the age of 43 following a two-year battle with a rare form of cancer.
Dequenne was diagnosed in October 2023 with adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the adrenal glands. Initially hopeful, she shared in April 2024 that she had gone into remission, expressing her desire to return to acting after spending nearly two weeks hospitalized.
“I almost forgot what I had gone through, leaving the hospital after 13 days… What a fierce battle,” she wrote in a candid message to fans on social media.
However, her fight was far from over. By the end of 2024, the cancer returned. In a December interview with French broadcaster TF1, Dequenne offered a heartbreaking update on her condition. “I know I will not live as long as I had hoped,” she said, her voice filled with grace and quiet courage.
Despite her deteriorating health, Dequenne remained open about her experience, drawing praise for her strength and candor. Her performances had long earned her acclaim across Europe, including the prestigious Un Certain Regard Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 for her breakout role in Rosetta.
Emilie Dequenne passed away on March 16 at a hospital just outside Paris, leaving behind a legacy of powerful performances and a reputation for unwavering resilience.
