Dem Gov Who Bragged About Hiding Illegal Alien in Home Gets More Bad News

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy may be on his way out of office due to term limits, but he’s far from fading into the background — and thanks to a reckless public remark, his name could soon be front and center in a federal investigation.

Murphy, whose approval rating has sunk to somewhere between George Santos and a stomach virus, recently came under scrutiny following comments he made during what The New York Times generously called “a freewheeling discussion” at a progressive event back in February.

In that conversation, the outgoing governor seemed to joke — or admit — that he had helped harbor a woman whose immigration status was unresolved.

“There is someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to,” Murphy told the crowd. “And we said, ‘You know what? Let’s have her live at our house above our garage.’ And good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.”

That quip now has real consequences.

According to The Times, interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba has subpoenaed Murphy in relation to those comments. FBI agents have reportedly attempted to interview at least four people connected to the situation, signaling that this is no longer just political theater — it’s a serious federal matter.

Crucially, this probe is said to be separate from any broader Department of Justice inquiry into New Jersey’s so-called “sanctuary” policies, which have been upheld in court.

The remark didn’t escape the attention of former acting ICE Director Tom Homan, who warned earlier this year: “If he’s knowingly harboring or concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8, U.S. Code 1324. I would seek prosecution.”

Murphy’s office has since tried to walk the statement back, claiming he was “misinterpreted” and insisting no one — documented or otherwise — ever lived above his garage. A spokesperson further asserted that the person Murphy referenced was legally present in the U.S.

But now that a subpoena has reportedly landed on Murphy’s doorstep, the situation may be out of the spin zone. Neither the governor’s office nor the U.S. Attorney’s office is commenting publicly, and sources close to Murphy claim he’s unaware of any active investigation.

The timing couldn’t be worse for New Jersey Democrats. The governor’s fading popularity — and now a possible legal scandal — could prove toxic for Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the establishment pick running to succeed him in November. Sherrill, a moderate Democrat and Navy veteran, is already trailing expectations against GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump-aligned former state lawmaker who nearly unseated Murphy in 2021.

While Sherrill tries to keep her campaign away from the national spotlight and Murphy’s sagging coattails, this investigation could drag her right back into the fray. Especially if Republicans — and immigration hardliners — seize on it as proof of just how far progressive “allyship” has gone off the rails.

In a race that was already tighter than Democrats would like, Murphy’s loose talk might end up being the wildcard that tips the scale.
