Small Child Was Found Dead in a Calif. Parking Lot — and Police Are Left Shaken by ‘Horrific’ Crime

A devastating discovery rocked the community of Panorama City on Saturday morning, July 12, when the body of a young boy was found discarded near a dumpster in a parking lot along the 8200 block of Van Nuys Boulevard.

Authorities believe the child was between 3 and 4 years old. He was pronounced dead at the scene after officers from the LAPD’s Mission Division responded to a 7 a.m. emergency call.

“This is horrific, and it impacts every single one of us,” said Detective Meghan Aguilar of the Los Angeles Police Department, speaking to reporters. “We’ve got mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters — but you don’t have to be a parent to feel how deeply disturbing this is. I don’t know the cause of death at this time — that will be up to the coroner — but no one deserves to be treated this way.”

Investigators are now combing the area for surveillance footage and eyewitnesses in hopes of uncovering how the child ended up abandoned in such tragic circumstances. The LAPD Juvenile Division’s Abused Child Unit is leading the investigation.

The boy’s identity remains unknown, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the L.A. County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the official cause and manner of death.

On Saturday evening, shaken residents gathered for a candlelight vigil near the site where the child was found, expressing grief and disbelief.

“It weighs heavy on the heart,” said Corey Watkins, a local resident. “Three or four years old — so innocent. At that age, they’re looking to adults for protection.”

Christian Sanchez, whose family owns the nearby Nob Hill Banquet and Conference Center, was visibly emotional. The boy’s body had been left near the dumpsters used by the venue.

“I’m a father,” he said. “A 4-year-old — I can’t even imagine the pain that little baby went through. Can you imagine?”

As the community mourns and investigators search for answers, the haunting question remains: who left this child behind — and why?
