In a dramatic intervention during Sunday’s emergency United Nations Security Council session, China’s ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, condemned the United States for its airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and urged the immediate adoption of a ceasefire resolution.
Standing alongside Russia and Pakistan, Fu revealed that the three countries had jointly submitted a draft resolution demanding “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” protection for civilians, and renewed efforts toward diplomacy. The resolution also calls for strict adherence to international law and respect for Iranian sovereignty.
“The United States has blatantly violated the UN Charter, international norms, and Iran’s sovereign rights and territorial integrity,” Fu declared. “This reckless action further destabilizes an already volatile Middle East and delivers a severe blow to the global non-proliferation regime.”
China’s top envoy also issued a warning that further aggression would only fuel a larger conflict: “All parties, particularly Israel and the United States, must exercise restraint and avoid throwing more fuel on the fire. Dialogue, not escalation, is the path forward.”
In sharp contrast, Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea mounted a firm defense of President Trump’s decision to strike, stating, “After decades of hostility and provocation, the time finally came for the United States—defending both our ally and our own citizens—to act decisively.”
Shea reiterated longstanding grievances against the Iranian regime: “For 40 years, Iran has chanted ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel,’ spreading violence throughout the region and endangering global peace. The U.S. could no longer sit idle.”
She warned Tehran not to retaliate: “Iran should not escalate this situation further. Instead, we call on the regime to abandon its nuclear ambitions, cease targeting U.S. citizens and allies, and return to the table for real, good-faith negotiations.”
The clash at the UN highlights deepening global divisions, as China and Russia align more closely with Iran, while the U.S. stands firm alongside Israel. With tensions on the rise, the Security Council now faces growing pressure to intervene before the crisis spirals into a broader regional war.
