Congress devided, weighs war powers as Trump strikes Iran without authorization

Following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “very successful attack” on Iran’s nuclear facilities, a heated debate has erupted on Capitol Hill over the legality, implications, and next steps of U.S. involvement in the escalating conflict.

Republican Support with Caution
Most Republican lawmakers are showing strong deference to President Trump, offering their support for the decision to strike sovereign Iranian territory without prior Congressional authorization. For many in the GOP, especially those who view Iran as a direct threat to regional and global security, Trump’s move is seen as a powerful show of American strength and deterrence.

However, some concerns have emerged within Trump’s own base. Certain MAGA-aligned conservatives, who supported Trump in large part because of his “America First” and anti-endless war rhetoric, are beginning to express unease that the President may be veering into the kind of foreign entanglements he once campaigned against.

Democratic Divides Over Iran and Israel
Among Democrats, the response is notably fractured. While progressive lawmakers have condemned the strike and are demanding greater Congressional oversight, a faction of pro-Israel Democrats has vocally supported the action, citing Iran’s growing threat to Israel and its alleged involvement in funding terrorist groups like Hamas. That tension is likely to come to a head in the coming days, as pressure mounts for Congress to reassert its constitutional role under the War Powers Act, which grants the legislative branch authority to declare war or limit military action.
